Religious Education as the Study of Religion(s) – Profiling the Didactic Principle of Enquiry-Based Learning

This article presents enquiry-based learning, as framed by the RE-searchers Approach, as a subject-specific didactic principle suitable for various formats of RE. It shows how this principle supports a comprehensive concept of religious learning and offers a critical reflection on the cross-curricular paradigm of competence orientation. The article also presents empirical findings from a study that examined the practical potential of enquiry-based learning. In the context of the international discourse on a methodological turn in RE, the article argues for RE structured as the study of religion(s) in response to fundamental challenges to the subject.
